Match Report:
Midland Wolves FC vs Phoenix FC
HT: 1-0
FT: 2-1
Goals: Yu Xiang, BX
Assists: Welson
Cards: Nil
MW MOM: Yu Xiang
Formation: 4-1-2-1-2 (4-3-3)
Lineup: Gabriel, PC, Vincent (Jack), Alastair (Yeepoo), Sebas, Welson, Yu Xiang (Nikorasu), Jason (Calvin), Wenjie, Ray (Leonard), BX (Jason)
On a day where most of Singapore is enjoying the long weekend, the Wolves head into an encounter with Phoenix FC in what is dubbed as "the battle of the bottom dwellers", a title neither team wants to own. Facing each other for the first time, with Wolves fresh from their goal feast of 9 goals last week, and Phoenix drawing mid table Ace Galaxy last week, both teams come into the game brimming with confidence and form. In the temporary absence of the coaches Sebas did well to organise the team and set the formation for the game. Weather was good and sunny and both teams expecting a tough fight. Both knows that a loss at this juncture of the season would literally end the season.
So the game kicks off in a fast and furious fashion. Not long into the half, a corner kick delivered to the box was fumbled by the Phoenix keeper, and Ray was on the ball in a split second. However, he wasn't able to turn his chance into a goal opportunity in time and the ball was smothered. The consistant PC as usual was commanding the backline well, catching the opponents offside time and again, much to their frustration. The Woodlands Sec pitch was short and wide and very quickly affected our game play as our formation's 3 midfielders struggle to cope with the added width. Sebas was doing well in the left back position, dealing with the Phoenix's number 17 winger effectively, matching pace for pace, size for size. Opportunity came a knocking when Phoenix conceded a corner. Yu Xiang took the corner, and his delivery took a wicked swerve and went in off the side netting for a goal. If it was planned it was ingenius as the Phoenix keeper looked shaky all game. 1-0! Sebas had a moment of brillance when he won the ball on the left, interchanged passes with Welson and flicked the ball pass his marker. He controlled the ball and blasted a volley that just flew over the bar. Not long after Ramesh made a tactical switch and brought in last week's MOM Calvin for Jason, switching to a 4-5-1 to cover the width of the pitch and to protect the slim lead. BX and Yu Xiang switched flanks, with Wenjie playing support to Ray. Wenjie was having a good game, chasing down balls and intercepting play all game long. Ray and BX was causing Phoenix problems with their pace. Half time.
Half time switches saw Jack come in for Vincent. The game restarted and right from the onset Wolves plied pressure forward in search for the second to cement the win. Some quick interplay in the box found a loose ball heading towards Welson, who let rip a daisy cutter that was just inches off with the Phoenix keeper wholly beaten. Welson was having a great game in the centre of the park. The second came when Welson intercepted a stray pass by Phoenix, and he let a through pass that found BX. BX, with his usual pace and footwork just managed to beat his marker slightly and get into the box. He let loose a low grounder that found the back of the net. 2-0! Things looking up for Wolves. Ray had another close call when a high cross delivered by Yu Xiang into the box, and Ray headed the ball just over the bar. Yu Xiang showing good form carried over from the last game. Yu Xiang himself came close to a second when he latched on to the ball in the Phoenix penalty area, and outfoxed the keeper, side stepping and beating the rushing keeper completely. With the open goal at his mercy, he blasted his shot over the bar. Wasted opportunity. Another chance came a begging when Yu Xiang once again found space but his shot hit the upright and out for a goal kick. Alastair off for Yeepoo, Jason on for BX subsequently. Phoenix made their own subs and switched from 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2, then made even further subs and went for the jugular in a 3-4-3 formation. The Wolves were starting to feel the pressure as Phoenix started to attack through the flanks, overloading the left flanks with 3 attackers at one point. The Wolves were dealing with the threat well until controversy occured. A well played one-two by the Phoenix wingers sliced the defence open and the Phoenix striker was neck to neck in a foot race with PC heading into the box. PC in desperation shoved the striker off the ball at the edge of the box. The disgruntled fallen striker lashed out at PC and had a swing at him. PC, being the bigger man walked away before the incident blew over. Once order restored, the unbelieveable happened. The ref points to the spot! Wolves' protest fell on deaf ears as the ref must have left his glasses at home when he insisted he saw the incident in the box. Anyway the penalty was despatched coolly and the Wolves found themselves hanging on to a slim 2-1 lead. Not long after the ref blew the whistle for full time.
Learning Points:
- Wolves' MOM goes to Yu Xiang. Who was the creative spark in the game today. Worth mentioning are Wenjie and Welson, who played well to break up Phoenix's play in the middle of the park, and Sebas who rescued the defence a couple of occasions. Gabriel too did well with his goal kicks and handling.
- An improvement in defensive performance from last week's game, with the Wolves denied a clean sheet by some dubious refereeing. Still, chances were wasted and we could have scored a couple more. But good effort Wolves, keep it up!
- It's mid season now and we have 6 points out of a potential 21. By now we should have shaken off the early league nerves and week in week out football should have seasoned us some. We have played every opponent in the league already and no more excuses. Let's nick some points and strive for the mid table.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
League Game:
Midland Wolves FC vs Galactico Empire FC
Last result: 3-0 loss. They were the first team we played when we joined the league. Though we lost, it was more due to nerves rather than them being stronger. We knew we could beat them if we keep our passing game going as they weren't that good. Opponents are very physical, especially in centre mid positions. Their dangerman was their left winger, so our right back needs to be solid. Their attacks come mainly from the flanks. We had alot of chances, so that shows their defence is penetrable, so we need just to convert. They scored 3 goals, one from a corner which was due to our poor marking, another from a penalty, and the last from a flank low cross that weren't dealt with. So this game we need to tighten our defence and concentrate on the man-marking. They had a week's rest last week, so they may be rusty or they may be rested. Their last game they lost 3-1 to Morning Glory and had a player sent off. We are coming in riding on 2 wins, so lets keep the momentum going and make use of our current form to get our revenge. As location is quite far, make sure you are well rested the night before.

Match Report:
Midland Wolves FC vs Hougang North FC
HT: 3-1
FT: 6-3
Goals: Ray (2), Wenjie, Melvin, Yu Xiang, Calvin
Assists: JJ, Yu Xiang (2), Wenjie
Cards: Nil
MW MOM: Calvin
Formation: 4-1-2-1-2 (4-3-3)
Lineup: Kunyi, PC, Vincent (Naren), Jack (Melvin), Yeepoo (Calvin), Sebas (Welson), Welson (Syafiq), Yu Xiang (Nikorasu), JJ, Ray (Jason), Wenjie
Prior to the match, the Wolves know this (derby) is a must win game. Not having played the opponents, Wolves have no idea what their qualities are, so the Wolves decided to stick to the familar 4-3-3, but with a slightly different tactic to the last games. The return of Ramesh prompted a harsh pre-game talk but one that psyched the players up for the game. The referee was fashionably late, while the Wolves go about their paces with the warm up. Upon kick off, the action was quite frenetic with both teams trying to gain an edge by settling in earlier. The Wolves were more composed this game, and passing and possession were evidently better than the previous games. But alas, during a set piece conceded, the resulting cross was heading in-off the post before the ball bouced on the line for Kunyi to collect. From most people on the field it looked like the ball didn't cross the line, but the referee was adamant in his decision and the Wolves were down 0-1. There was a tinge of familiarity as the Wolves had gone down early in many games past. But hope was not far away as the Wolves surged forward in search of the equaliser. Some good play in the midfield set Ray free at the attacking third. With JJ by his side, they played some fantastic one touch aerial passes to slice through Hougang North's defence before Ray slotted in the goal. Equaliser! 1-1. The game restarted and the Wolves were psyched up by the morale boosting goal. While moving forward, a foul at the attacking third presented the Wolves with an opportunity at the left flank, about 35 yards out. Wenjie and Yu Xiang stood over the ball, and the quick thinking Wenjie took a quick freekick to catch the Hougang North's defence sleeping. His curling freekick swerved into the inside netting to make it 2-1! Wolves defence were coping pretty well with Hougang North's attacks, only Yee Poo having some problems with his opponent being more physical. Tactical switch was made, with Melvin on for Jack, and Sebas dropped to centreback. It was an ingenious move by Ramesh as Melvin's run from deep made an immediate impact in the game. Hougang North's players were struggling to cope with the new threat posed by Melvin's penetrating runs. Yu Xiang too was having a good game, his pace and trickery fooling his marker several times. One time Yu Xiang managed to shake off his marker, and crossed a ball into the box. Wenjie missed the header, but Melvin was in the box to tap in and convert the cross. Great play. 3-1. Calvin on of Yeepoo who appears to struggle abit. Calvin's introduction was galvanising with his power overlaps causing massive havoc to the opponents. Half time.
Half time a harsh tirade from Ramesh to wake the team and keep their focus. Alex Ferguson comes to mind. haha. Game restarted with the Wolves feeling confident, and started strongly as well. Again some good work on the left mid by Yu Xiang and Calvin combo created the chance for Yu Xiang to cross in for Ray to tap in once again. 4-1! Booya! However, Hougang North has other plans and does not go down without a fight. Against the run of play, their midfielder found space at the edge of the Wolves' box. Pressure by PC and Welson did little to stifle the curling shot which beat Kunyi to the left side of the post. Fight back by Hougang North. 4-2. Naren, who came in for Vincent, was performing pretty well in right back winning some crucial headers. PC as as usual commanding the defence well. Motivated by the goal, the opponents too were troubling us, with 2 shots hitting our woodwork. Finally some luck on our side. One incident on the left wing, Wenjie managed to find Yu Xiang with a through ball, and with time on the ball Yu Xiang picked his spot and crossed in, but ball swerve towards goal instead and goalkeeper fumbled the ball and it was 5-2. Fluke but it all counts. :)
Hougang North were now starting to push forward in numbers and throwing everything forward. The Wolves was pinned into our own half and their reward came when one of the striker manage to shrug off the challenge of PC and drill in a low shot which Kunyi was only able to parry out, and subsequent poor marking by Sebas as the other striker was able to latch onto the loose ball and shoot into a empty net. 5-3. Sebas received a pass from Wenjie in the midfield circle and was about to release the ball when one of the opposition midfielder came in with a studs tackle. As a result of the tackle, Sebas wasn't able to continue with play and got subbed by Welson, who was subbed out earlier for Syafiq. Our sixth goal came when Calvin tackled the opponent striker in the Wolves' own half and brought the ball forward. He went on an incredible mazy run to beat several opponents and saw the keeper way off his line and lob his shot over the keeper. 6-3. Wonder goal! Also calvin's first goal for the club. Other incidents and close calls were when Jason had another dribble where he shrugged off sliding tackles from 3 defenders and manage to reach the edge of the opponents penalty area, but lack of composure saw his thorugh pass for Syafiq intercept by a defender. Nicholas who was on for Yu Xiang, too had a tap-in goal and was celebrating his goal when referee blew the whistle for offside. Final 10 mins were very nervy as the Wolves endured defending for the Wolves 1st win. Wolves were totally pinned in their own half and only able to attack in short spells. Final whistle came.
It was a day of firsts. 1st win, 1st points for the Wolves in the League, first goal for the team by Calvin, Melvin.
Learning Points:
- Wolves' MOM goes to Calvin, who's power running and overlaps caused massive problems to the opponents. His tireless running and ball winning on the left also basically won us the left wing. He was also the one who initiated the Wolve's 4th goal when he won the ball and set Yu Xiang on his way to cross for Ray to score. Accurate passes and finally to top off a stupendous performance, he capped it with a wonder goal.
- Other players who turned in good performances include Wenjie, whose overall game play and quick thinking turned the game around. Yu Xiang, who turned in his best game for the club so far. Ray, who's determination if anything, got him his 2 goals. Melvin, who though out of the game for so long, made a big impact with his runs both on and off the ball, from deep.
- We conceded 3 goals, of which all may have been prevented. The first goal, if our marking was tighter and prevented the header. The second, if again the marking was tighter and not let the opponent have time to switch the ball to his stronger foot. Third was a lapse in concentration.
- Lets build on this result and go for our next win. Go Wolves!

Midland Wolves - League Game this Sunday 6th Sept
Hi Midland Wolves,

Match Report:
Midland Wolves FC vs Morning Glory FC
FT: 1-4
HT: 1-2
Goals: JJ
Cards: Nil
MW MOM: JJ
Lineup: Gabriel, Vincent , PC, Sheares (Jack), Jack (Calvin), Sebas, Welson, Jason (Yeepoo), Yu Xiang (Ray), JJ, Wenjie
Formation: 4-3-3 Atk
It was an overcast day as dark clouds loom over the field before the game began. Not knowing what to expect from the opponents, whom the Wolves never played before till then. The Wolves were coming in from a difficult defeat against a lucky Chinatown FC the previous week, while the opponents Morning Glory FC (MG) had one week's rest the week before, and they were coming in with a good vein of form, being undefeated in the league so far and their last game drawing with Chinatown. Obvious from the height disadvantage, team player-coach Jack prepared the Wolves with instructions to play the ball on the ground, and switch to long ball if it rains.
The game kicked off in drizzling conditions, making the pitch heavy and slick. The opening 15 minutes were on the back foot and the Wolves struggled to get into the game, while Morning Glory was comfortable on the attack. 2 free kicks and 3 corners later, the Wolves finally was able to get into the game. Most of the problem area came through the centre, where MG's main dangerman No.81 towers over everyone on the field and was winning most of the high balls served to him. Both our reliable centre backs PC and Sheares struggled to cope with his height advantage. Whilst the ground attacks were orchestrated by MG's playmaker, who was causing all sorts of problems with his dribbling and distribution. Before long, a free kick conceded in the defensive third by the Wolves resulted in MG's first goal. The Wolves' defence tried to play the offside on the freekick, but the referee didn't blow for it. The receiving No.81 from MG got the ball and had free run on goal, beating Gabriel one-on-one. 0-1. The Wolves surged on, frustrated with the referee's decision, but knowing they can get back into the game. Sebastian was having a good game, as were Vincent and JJ, who in particular was causing hell to the MG's left back with his running. Coupled with Wenjie's support, most of the Wolves attacks came from the right wing. Constant pressure, and some good play found Vincent with the ball near the corner flag, and his cross managed to find JJ who was left unmarked. JJ head the ball into the corner out of reach of the MG keeper. Great goal. 1-1. Game on! It was really starting to pour now and pitch started to get water logged. A free kick on the left wing presented itself to the Wolves. Jason stood over the ball, and his free kick was well wide of the target. Lack of composure, concentration and communication left the left flank of the Wolves toothless, with many possession lost unnecessarily. A free kick was conceded by a body check from Jack. The resulting free kick found the tall No.81 once again and his lucky back header found the back of the net. 1-2. Half-Time.
Second half Jack came off for Calvin, Ray came on for Yu Xiang, in an attempt to reignite the spark in the left wing. Game restarted and it was an even affair in the beginning. Sebas, Welson, PC and Vincent, aware of the threat of No.81, took turns to try to stifle his influence. As the Wolves tried to push forward to attack, it started to rain again and wet conditions made the going tough for the inexperienced Wolves. The passing game broke down and MG players seem to thrive on such conditions with their flicks finding more success at passing. During one such attack in the box, PC fell a MG player in the box and the referee points to the spot, yet again as the Wolves conceded 4 penalties in 5 games. The penalty was retaken twice after infringement into the box, but the last attempt stood as the No.81 scored, making it a hat-trick. 1-3. Eager to restart, Wolves tried to play in the muddy conditions as the quality of the game was reduced to wild punts and stray/stuck balls due to the waterlogged pitch. Again the main cause of the problem was MG's playmaker who found more freedom in the centre with more attention given to the No.81 dangerman by the Wolves. A throughball down the middle split the Wolves defence and as PC tried to recover, he body checked the forward. The free kick was blasted over the bar. Wenjie, Ray and Jason was having a horrible time in the muddy conditions. A fatigued Sheares came off for Jack. Another well worked move by MG players down our left caught Calvin out of position, and the move resulted in a low cross that was converted by the MG midfielder. 1-4. Some last ditch defending from PC and Jack helped keep the score down as MG players started to find space in the middle, where our midfield went missing. As valiant as the effort from the Wolves was in the final 20 minutes, it was too little too late as the lack of creative spark and experience caused the fall of the Wolves this time. Full time.
Points to note:
- MOM goes to JJ, who's causing the most problems to the MG defence and he scored the consolation goal, which is our first in the league from open play.
- Wet conditions killed us. We weren't used to changing our tactics and playing in wet conditions, though there was a couple of training sessions in the past on playing in wet conditions.
- Lack of creativity in the middle. Once the pitch got soggy, our attackers were bereft of attacking ideas.
- Penalties are a killer. Too often, too many. Our defenders and players must learn to be more mindful of physical challenges in the box. While some penalties were doubtful due to the referee's call, but nonetheless we shouldn't present the opportunity in the first place.
- Individually, Yu Xiang needs to improve his reaction speed and anticipation of high balls. Jason needs to learn to stick to his position. Vincent had a good game attacking, but was too often out of position when defending, likewise for Calvin. Wenjie had an off game and had a quiet game. JJ could do well to be more vocal and louder. Ray can improve by learning how to play in wet conditions. PC needs to watch his tackles in the box and read the game better when it comes to setting the offside trap (set the trap when play is deep, contain and play deep when the ball is wide).
- On the plus side, Sebas, JJ, Gabriel and Vincent had a relatively good game.
- Also, the scoreline did not reflect the games we played so far. Most of the games, we could do much better if we play to our potential. As the monsoon season begins, we can expect more wet conditions. It would do us well to quickly adapt to playing in such conditions.
- We have played the all the top teams in the league already. We have yet to play the weaker (on paper) teams, namely Hougang North and Phoenix. So the best is yet ahead of us. Based on past performances of the opponents as an indicator, we should have won at least 2 out of our last 5 games. Other than a couple of the teams, we matched if not better the other teams in terms of game play and team work. The league gives us a very good opportunity to learn. Lets learn from these experiences and do better in the remaining games and win us some. We will start playing the teams we have played before again. We should be wiser now. They took 3 points from us. Lets take them back. Just do it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
League Game:
Midland Wolves FC vs Ace Galaxy FC
Last result: 0-2 loss
Team notes: This is the all malay team we played, wearing the pink jerseys. They have a good touch and ball control individually, but lack co-ordination in attack and likes to play through balls down the centre. We caught them offside till the cows came home last time round. Their keeper is probably their best player. They have very quick, physical and tricky players down the flanks. They aren't very good in the air and prefers to play ball to feet. This month is Ramadan and opponents should be fasting on normal days, so come game day they might be slightly physically weaker, but still we shouldn't underestimate them.
