Match Report:
Midland Wolves FC vs Ace Galaxy FC
HT: 0-1
FT: 0-2
MW's Cards: Nil
MW's Goals: Nil
MW's MOM: JJ
Formation: 3-5-2 AT
Team: Kunyi, PC, Dansen, Fabian (Vincent/Khairi/Yeepoo), Keegan, Sebas (Fabian), Welson, Jason, Syafiq (Wenjie), JJ, BX (Ray)
This is our second game of the league, and we managed to settle in much better than the first game. There was much feeling of anticipation on the bench as we started out strongly, with our defence combination of Dansen, PC and Fabian doing well keeping the central region locked down. Midfield tactics of playing wingbacks were fairly effective as we managed to pin the opponents in their own half in the early part of the game, with the first corner going to us. JJ, who was looking lively throughout the game had the first opportunity when the cross came in. He outjumped the defender and his header was soaring towards the corner but for an acrobatic save from Galaxy's keeper denied us our first goal. Another good opportunity arose when Jason and JJ combined well in midfield with 2 series of wall passes to cut through the opponent's midfield like they weren't there. JJ had a shot on goal but the shot was weak and easy for the keeper. Jason had the third chance but his shot was saved again with a fantastic acrobatic dive from Galaxy's keeper. That keeper would win the game MOM in my opinion.
Fabian pulled up with a hamstring problem and Vincent came in at right wingback, with Sebas dropping into centreback. Welson was doing well in the DMC role but lacked support, so the midfield was starting to be overwhelmed. Galaxy were mainly left with attacks through the flanks but mostly resulted in nothing. But they won their first corner and from that very corner scored. Kunyi was impeded to the save but the referee didn't see the incident. 0-1 to Galaxy. Half time.
Second half Syafiq off Wenjie on. Vincent off Khairi on. Keegan was doing well for most of the game, but as the more technically comfortable opponents started to dominate play in midfield our flanks were starting to show signs of weaknesses. Khairi was on to replace Vincent to keep pace with Galaxy's speedy left midfielder. But after 10 mins, a hard tackle and Khairi off and Yeepoo on. PC was commanding as usual and we managed to catch the opponents offside on a few occasions as they played direct. They were running out of attacking ideas and Galaxy resorted to long shots which is easy for Kunyi to deal with. Kunyi hardly had to make any save in the game. Dansen's long punts from defence was good, but again our midfield was lacking bite in winning the aerial balls as the opponent's start to dominate possession. Wolves defence were working overtime. BX was very active dribbling and causing all sorts of problem to the opponent's defence, till the point where he was chopped down numerous times and he lost his cool ranting at the referee for lack of protection. BX was taken out and Ray in to maintain the dynamics of the team. Ray's pace and bold running was causing a different type of problem to the opponent's. The second goal came when Keegan played the Galaxy's forward on-side and he went on to beat Kunyi on a one on one. 0-2 to Galaxy. Full time.
Wolve's MOM: JJ. Showed very good touches in the game, composed game play, combined well with Jason, could've scored and had several shots on target.
Points to note:
While we dominated the first half, we need to be more effective in our finishing. We created more chances but weren't able to finish. In fact we created twice as much chances as the opponents. Our opponents only had 3 shots on goal and 2 went in. We had at least 5-6 but not converted. Some credit to the opponent keeper, but still we should've done better to score.
Attacking midfielders need to help in supporting the defence. Defence was working overtime cause midfield was over run.
While there were spells of good possession, but our passing could still be better. and MORE EFFECTIVE. Again, we had a lack of crosses in from the wings.
On the whole we played better than our first game, and the scoreline flattered the opponents, where the game was in fact much tighter than it reflected. But we CAN play at a much higher level as we have done it before. Keep working Wolves! We can do it!
